These are some of the questions that people usually ask me, if you are an expatriate, digital nomad, veteran, retired in Mexico, or are thinking about coming to live here contact me, I have advised many foreigners on legal and investment issues.
Technically, foreigners are not allowed to buy Real Estate in Mexico within 62 miles of an international border or 31 miles of the coast but exist sidestepped legally, you will have to purchase the beach property through a trust, known as a fideicomiso, with a Mexican bank.

The living cost in Mexico depends on your lifestyle choice, an average cost varies between $600 and $2,000 USD. The most popular and safest place to live in Mexico include Cancun and Tulum in the Riviera Maya, Valladolid and Merida in the Yucatan Peninsula, Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlán in the Pacific, Lake Chapala and San Miguel de Allende in the west, and Mexico City (CDMX) and Queretaro in the center of the country.
When you travel to Mexico, you get a tourist visa called "FMM" that permits you travel through Mexico, this is available for a period of 180 days.
Foreigners who intend to move to Mexico for a period longer than six months must have a Resident Visa, foreigners who want to settle in Mexico permanently must have a Mexican Permanent Resident Card.
To apply for a permanent resident visa, you must:
* Have certain close family connections in Mexico, or
* Apply for retirement status and prove you have sufficient qualifying monthly income or savings, or
* Have 4 consecutive years of regular status as Temporary Resident, or
* Have 2 consecutive years of regular status as Temporary Resident where that Temporary residency was issued through marriage to a Mexican national or a foreign permanent resident, or
* Be granted residency on humanitarian grounds or through political asylum.
